![]() ![]() Although her favorite dessert was Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream, her homemade baked goods were incredible. As for the food, Gladys was a wonderful cook and baker. They would decorate the house according to the season, right down to the centerpieces on the table. Gladys and Ralph also liked to host family gatherings. They would cross the Straits quite often, at a time before the Mackinaw Bridge connected the northern and lower peninsulas of Michigan. They enjoyed traveling to beautiful northern Michigan, whether it was to Black Lake or the Mackinac Straits. She and Ralph took many trips together, oftentimes to Ralph’s parents’ cottage on Black Lake. Gladys kept a very busy schedule, yet she always made time for her family. She took additional classes at Aquinas College, graduating in 1964. Though she devoted most of her time and energy to this job, Gladys continued to study. Gladys became a school teacher in 1961 when she accepted a position at Oakleigh Elementary. She then went on to earn her teaching certificate. She began taking classes at Grand Rapids Junior College and graduated in 1958. Gladys remained a faithful follower of her Lord Jesus Christ throughout her life and enjoyed being active in her church community.Īfter her children were grown, Gladys decided to return to school. Gladys and her family had been members for years, but with time, both Gladys and Ralph had become directors of different Sunday School classes offered there. More than anything else, Ralph and Gladys were excited to involve their daughters with the Wallin Congregational Church. To this end, they decided that the family should grow to include one more member – a lovable mutt named Fuzzy. Naturally, Ralph and Gladys wanted to give their girls a happy childhood. Linda was born in 1943 and was followed by Verda in 1947. Eventually, Ralph became a purchasing agent for John Widdicomb Company and, shortly before the birth of their first child, he moved with his wife to their permanent residence: 304 Sunset Avenue N.W. They married on Novemat the Candlelight House.įor the next couple of years, Ralph and Gladys rented an apartment together. Ralph and Gladys dated for a while, but it was not long before they decided that they were meant to be together. ![]() At the party, she met a young man named Ralph Scheifley. Gladys reluctantly made an appearance, but it turned out to be one of the best nights of her life. Although Gladys did not want to go, her friend insisted. Some years after graduation, one of Gladys’ friends invited her to a House Party put on by the Methodist Church Singles' Club. Gladys graduated high school with the class of 1931. Meanwhile, she attended Union High School, where she applied herself to her studies and became a member of the National Honor Society. Gladys voluntarily took on new responsibilities around the house, doing anything she could to help support her family. Her father, Leonard Bolier, died of Tuberculosis. Gladys performed in many recitals, dancing to the pieces of music her mother would play.Īt the age of 16, Gladys and her entire family experienced a life changing event. When Anna May was asked to play the piano for the local dance school, she accepted the position in exchange for her daughter’s enrollment in classes. She served as the organist and choir director of her church as well. Even so, Anna May earned additional money by teaching piano lessons. Sometime later, young Gladys was joined by a baby brother, Leonard.Īs a jeweler at DeVries Jewelry Store on the west side of Grand Rapids, Leonard made a comfortable living for his family. Leonard and Anna named their newborn daughter Gladys. This was the hometown of a couple named Leonard and Anna May (Winn) Bolier, who, ironically enough, welcomed their first child at Butterworth Hospital on July 4, 1915, as the entire country celebrated patriotism, unity, and independence. Grand Rapids, Michigan, was no exception. World War I made patriotism abundant throughout the country. By expressing her love through her actions, her words, and her faith, she allowed herself to be a good friend to everyone she met. Gladys was an incredibly generous woman who changed people’s lives for the better. ![]()
